Guidant Corporation

CastNET™ System Gets the Word Out to 3,000+ Employees

Traditional bulletin boards and mass voice mail messages have been the norm of most corporations’ communications processes for the past several years.  Using these delivery systems, important announcements, notices and other messages are posted on bulletin boards or conveyed via telephone. It is up to individual employees to seek out the information in order to stay up to date on corporate happenings.

Recently, however, Guidant Corporation in St. Paul, Minnesota decided that traditional modes of communication were no longer effective in its innovative and forward-moving culture. Guidant, a world leader in the design and development of cardiovascular medical products, decided to take on the task of improving methods of communication to its 3,000 employees.

Similar to most large corporations, Guidant’s main communication method consisted of mass voice mails and messages posted on bulletin boards throughout the company’s sprawling six-building campus. In the past, one individual was responsible for physically replacing notices and other messages on these bulletin boards. A team of Guidant employees was tasked with
researching and choosing a cutting-edge digital communication system that not only would enable Guidant to effectively distribute messages to its employees quickly and easily, but would also support future plans for growth and the need for continued improvements in communications.

To start the process, Larry Bangert, Media Center Producer for Guidant, contacted several vendors for information, including
Digital Display Group, a division of Alpha Video & Audio, Inc., in Minneapolis. Director of Digital Display Group (DDG) Lance Hutchinson demonstrated the CastNET™ communication capabilities to the Guidant decision-making team. The demo included examples of how Guidant’s displays could look using DDG’s CastNET and MessageBar™ software. “We sent them some of our corporate literature and Lance turned it into demo content,” said Bangert. “We were thoroughly impressed that the demo was custom-tailored to us. It immediately gave us an idea of what the system would look like on our campus. CastNET was sold before Lance even left the building."

Bangert said they have received extremely positive feedback on the new solution.  “Employees love it. The communications department loves it. The CEO loves it. It looks good, it’s easy to use and it’s effective.” He also said the company has been very impressed with the level of service they have received from Digital Display Group.  “Customer service is very important to us with this system, and DDG has been excellent in this area as well.”

The project was completed June, 2005.
