Baylor University Athletic Facilities Control Room / BaylorVision
The Challenge:
To build video replay control rooms for newly installed video boards at the campus’s four largest sporting venues (Floyd Casey Stadium-Football, Ferrell Center-Basketball/Volleyball, Baylor Ballpark-Baseball & Getterman Stadium-Softball) on a limited budget without compromising the system’s overall creative capabilities and flexibility.
The Alpha Solution:
Working with Baylor, Alpha Video developed a multi-phase plan to equip all four control rooms on the university’s campus, and provided the system engineering as well as on-site integration. In phase one the Floyd Casey control room was outfitted using
new and previously purchased equipment. Small control room systems were also put together for Baylor Ballpark and Getterman Stadium. While this left Baylor with three functioning control rooms, budget restrictions meant that equipment had to be constantly moved from one venue to the next, primarily between Floyd Casey Stadium and the Ferrell Center. While functionally feasible, this created several logistical problems for Baylor.
In phase two of the plan - again working against tight budget restrictions - Alpha Video provided the necessary equipment to further complete the Ferrell Center control room, cutting down on equipment movement and logistical problems. Upgrades were also made to the control room at Floyd Casey stadium.
In phase three of the plan, Alpha Video provided the necessary equipment to complete both the Floyd Casey stadium and Ferrell Center control rooms. Both venues were upgraded to a triax infrastructure and new cameras were added to the mix. Equipment movement other than cameras is no longer required between any of the facilities and each operates autonomous from the other. In addition, upgrades were made to the BaylorVision offices, where all the content for each venue is produced. Phase three was completed in the summer of 2005.
The Final Phase of the plan, scheduled for the summer of 2006, includes further upgrades to both the Ferrell Center and Baylor Ballpark.
The Results:
By working closely with the client to understand their budget, timelines and production requirements, Alpha Video has delivered a series of control rooms that helps BaylorVision produce over 100 sporting and special events annually. The BaylorVision productions help enhance the fan experience at all venues including around the world via the Internet.
“Re-engineering our football and basketball facilities to a broadcast standard was an exciting and daunting job. The crew at Alpha Video did excellent work. In athletic terms they excelled in the pre-game, game, and post-game execution.”
